Learning sight words doesn’t have to mean sitting still with flashcards! In fact, kids remember words best when they see them, move with them, and have fun while learning. For preschool and kindergarten learners, movement and repetition make sight word practice stick. Here are two simple, play‑based games you can try right now with items you already have at home.

1. Hide and Seek Sight Words

Turn your living room or playroom into a sight word adventure! Write sight words on flashcards (or print some colorful ones) and hide them around your house.

Call out a word — for example, “Find the!” — and let your child search high and low until they spot it. Once they find it, have them read it aloud, spell it out, or even use it in a sentence. You can easily adjust the difficulty based on your child’s age or reading level. Use easier words like a, I, the, or is for beginners, and expand to said, come, want, or here as they progress.

2. “Find the Word” Toy Game

This game is quick to set up and perfect for short attention spans. Spread sight word cards on the floor or a table. Then say, “Find a,” or “Find the,” and let your child point to the word — or better yet, have their favorite toy “walk” or “jump” onto it!

It’s a simple way to mix play and learning. Using toys adds imagination, which builds engagement and focus for little learners especially those who love to move and explore.

You can switch it up by timing them (“Let’s see how fast you can find and!") or letting your child become the one who calls out the words next time.

Why Sight Word Games Work

Sight word play like this helps kids:

  • Strengthen memory through movement and discovery

  • Build visual recognition for high‑frequency words that don’t follow phonics rules

  • Develop confidence reading simple sentences

When learning feels like play, kids stay motivated and that motivation leads to reading success.
