Blending CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant) is a big step in learning to read, but it doesn’t have to feel like work. When kids get to move, laugh, and play while they practice, they build confidence and actually look forward to reading time. Here are three fun, low-prep games you can use at home to make blending CVC words exciting for your preschool or kindergarten child.
1. Word Hide & Seek
Turn your house into a word hunt to make blending practice feel like an adventure.
Write simple CVC words (like “cat,” “map,” “sun,” “bed,” “hat”) on small cards or sticky notes.
Hide the cards around one room or in a safe area of your home.
Tell your child how many words are hidden and send them to find one card at a time.
When they find a card, have them sound out each letter and blend the sounds together to read the word.
You can add extra fun by having them:
Act out the word (pretend to be a “cat” or “bug”).
Draw a quick picture of the word after reading it.
This game builds phonemic awareness, keeps kids moving, and gives lots of repetition with CVC words without feeling like a worksheet.
2. Word Balloon Pop
If your child loves balloons, this blending game will be a huge hit.
Write one CVC word per small slip of paper.
Fold the papers and place them inside balloons before blowing them up.
Spread the balloons on the floor or in a big basket.
Let your child choose a balloon, pop it (you can help if needed), and pull out the word.
Have them say each sound and then blend: /c/ /a/ /t/ → “cat.”
You can make it even more motivating by:
Using different colored balloons for different word families (e.g., “-at,” “-in,” “-ug”).
Letting them earn a small sticker or high-five for each word they read.
Word Balloon Pop turns blending practice into a multi-sensory experience: kids see the word, hear themselves read it, feel the balloon pop, and stay fully engaged.

3. Word Hopscotch
Blending practice + fresh air = a win for everyone.
Head outside with sidewalk chalk.
Draw hopscotch boxes on the ground, but instead of numbers, write a different CVC word in each box.
Call out a word and have your child hop to that word, saying the sounds as they land: “/d/ – /o/ – /g/… dog!”
Once they get comfortable, you can flip it: they hop first, then read the word they land on.
This game supports:
Blending practice in a movement-rich way.
Gross motor skills and coordination.
Confidence as they start to recognize words more quickly.
You can rotate word sets over time (short a one day, short i another) so they get lots of practice with different vowel sounds.
Make CVC Blending Playful and Consistent
These three simple games: Word Hide & Seek, Word Balloon Pop, and Word Hopscotch turn blending CVC words into playful, memorable moments at home. Mix and match them during the week, repeat favorite words, and slowly introduce new ones as your child grows more confident. With a little creativity and movement, blending practice becomes something they’re excited to do, not something they want to avoid.
